Päätimme lähteä kahdestaan isompaan ruokakauppaan Venceen ja samalla pysähtyä Chapelle du Rosairessa, josta kerroinkin jo toisen päivän postauksessa. Chapelle du Rosaire on siis Henri Matissen entisen mallinsa ja hoitajansa, sittemmin dominikaaninunnaksi ryhtyneen Monique Bourgeois’n pyynnöstä suunnittelema kappeli Vencessa. Matisse itse piti sitä mestariteoksenaan ja kappeli onkin Vencen merkittävin nähtävyys.
Ulkopuolelta pieni valkoinen kappeli vaikutti melko vaatimattomalta, tosin oven yläpuolella oleva seinämaalaus antoi jo vähän esimakua, millaista odottaa. Ulkoa päin näytti taas siltä, että onkohan koko paikka edes auki. Avasimme oven, laskeuduimme portaat alas ja maksoimme sisäänpääsyn. Kun avasimme oven kappeliin sisään, yllätykseksemme se olikin ihan täpötäynnä ihmisiä. Kappeli oli pelkistetty, valkoinen myös sisältä sekä valoisa. Seiniä koristi muutama Matissen suuri maalaus - ne oli tehty yksinkertaisin vedoin mustalla vakoiselle laatalle. Lasi-ikkunoista hehkuivat keltainen, vihreä ja sininen väritys.
Kappeli oli yksinkertaisuudessaan näyttävä - sen puhtaus teki minuun suuren vaikutuksen. Ehkä erityisesti siksi, koska se eroaa niin paljon suurimmasta osasta koristeellisia ja jylhiä kirkkoja, joissa olen aiemmin vieraillut. Ehdottomasti näkemisen arvoinen paikka. Mielenkiintoni heräsi nähdä enemmän Matissen muitakin teoksia. Nizzassa on Matisse-museo, mutta tuskin tällä reissulla jää aikaa käydä siellä.
Kappelin jälkeen hurautimme Venceen, joka tällä kertaa kylpi aurinkonpaisteessa: helteessä oli mukavaa istahtaa lasilliselle kylmää shampanjaa ja katsella kaupungin menoa. Rentouttava iltapäivä. Kävimme muutamassa pikkuliikkeessä ja suuntasimme sitten ruokaostoksille. Isommassa kaupassa oli huomattavasti enemmän valikoimaa, ja saimmekin kasaan erinomaiset ainekset illan äyriäispaellaan. Ilta oli lämmin ja istuimme terassilla syömässä pimenevässä illassa. Pelailimme tietysti myös petanque, joka toimii hyvin koko perheen lajina.

We decided to go grocery shopping in Vence just the two of us, and on the way stop by the Chapelle du Rosaire, which I already mentioned in my post about the second day in France. This chapel in Vence was designed by Henri Matisse on request of his former model and nurse, Monique Bourgeois, who had become a Dominican nun. Matisse himself regarded it as his masterpiece and it is the most significant attraction in Vence.
On the outside the small white chapel seemed pretty modest, but the painting over the door gave a little insight on what to expect. It seemed again as the whole place was dead and if we wouldn’t have checked the opening hours, I would have been certain that it is closed. We opened the door and went down the stairs and paid for the entree. When we opened the door inside the chapel, to our surprise, it was crowded with people. The chapel itself was very plain, all-white also on the inside and luminous. The walls were decorated with a few large murals by Matisse. They were made with simple brush moves in black onto white tiles. The glass windows glowed in yellow, green and blue coloring.
The chapel was magnificent in its simplicity - its purity made a huge impression on me. Maybe especially because it differs so much from the mostly ornamental and imposing churches I have visited before. This is a spot absolutely worth seeing. This also woke my interest in seeing more of Matisse’s other works. In Nice there is a Matisse museum, but probably there is no time for a visit during this trip.
After the visit to the chapel we drove to Vence, which bathed this time in sunlight. It was nice to sit down for a cool glass of champagne in the heat and watch people passing by. What a relaxing afternoon. We checked out to some boutiques and headed grocery shopping. The bigger store had even better selection and we got some great ingredients for a seafood paella in the evening. The evening was warm and we sat outside on the terrace eating in the darkening evening. Of course we also played some pétanque, which has become a favorite of the whole family.
