Saint-Jeannet’n viinitilalla / Visiting the vineyard in Saint-Jeannet

We had planned to visit some vineyard during our stay in France. Luckily, there was one near our house in Saint-Jeannet. The information on the website seemed very promising: they offered also tours in English. My husband recommended anyway, that i should call them, since you never can be so sure about the English skills around here. I politely started the conversation in French asking, if they spoke English. The guy at the other end just replied shortly ”No.” This confused me a little bit but I was determined to visit the vineyard anyway. I succeeded to book us in for the afternoon without difficulty. I announced to my husband that he needs to settle with it and that we hopefully get something out of the visit with my language skills. We decided to leave the children at the villa with our au pair, which turned out to be an excellent decision.

After a relaxed morning at the pool with lots of sunshine (what better way is there to spend your vacation) it was soon time to leave for the visit. When we were heading to the villa to change clothes we noticed something weird brown stuff in the pool. I do not think I need to describe this in more detail, and it never occurred to us that something like this could happen when letting the smaller boy also swim in the pool. Shit happens might be a good way to summarize this. With children you never know what’s going to happen, and of course such things occur most likely when you are in a hurry. We were fortunate to get in contact with the gardener, who promised to come clean the pool the same day. Something, we had not taken for granted on a Saturday evening.

We drove off fast and found easily the way to the vineyard. When we walked from the car to the house, we admired the long rows of grapevines leading far downhill. An indescribable beautiful place. The house had a gorgeous view down to a castle, and this hot sunny afternoon felt like the perfect moment to sit down and taste some local wines.

Arriving at the house we did not see anyone so we were shouting bonjour around until the same man arrived, with whom I had been talking on the phone. I told him that my French is not very good and that my husband does not speak French at all. To our surprise he asked us, if we would prefer having the tasting in English. We naturally agreed to this and he told us, that his wife speaks English and soon she arrived. It’s just so amusingly French that he did not consider sharing this information with us already on the phone.

We sat down at a table in the back yard and the wines were brought to the table. We tasted one white wine (nice, very mineralic taste), one rosé (basic Provence stuff) and two red wines, of which the first one felt a bit too young, but the other one was more round in taste and clearly more mature. The aroma was very sweet, a bit madeira-like, and the taste was rich. At last we tasted a great muscat desert wine. The lady told that the vineyard has been owned by her family for centuries and they have a Indication Géographique Protégée marking, which protects their lands. This gives them more freedom concerning for example the choice of grapes than AOC, but also their wines are regularly monitored for quality in order to maintain the classification. They had their own, very interesting process to ripen the wines: the wines were left in big glass bottles to ripen in the sun. We hadn’t heard about this kind of process before.

We sat there for a long time and got caught up in conversation about wine and life altogether. A perfect moment, during which the world stands still and everything else around you disappears. Our allday life is hectic, so we know to treasure moments like this. My phone ringing was a wake up call to us to get back to reality - it was time to return to the villa to attend our younger son, who had been screaming the time we were gone and also caught a fever. We bought a few bottles to take home with us. Unfortunately, we did not have any cash and they did not accept any credit cards, so they were very trusting in suggesting that we come back another day to pay for the wines (but still they packed all the bottles with us).

Dish of the day: grilled asparagus with prosciutto and parmesan, grilled prawn and fish, celery apple salad, green salad with spring onions
