Nizzan kaupunkikohteelle sattuikin taas helteinen ja kuuma päivä. Tarkoitus oli vähän kierrellä vanhaa kaupunkia (Vieux Nice), cours Saleyan toria sekä Promenade des Anglais -rantabulevardia. Mahdollisesti käydä jossain museossa, jos jää aikaa. Olen huomannut, että tämmöiset väljät suunnitelmat toimivat hyvin lasten kanssa (ja miksei aikuistenkin kesken). Jonkinlainen suunta ja tieto pitää olla siitä, mitä haluaa nähdä, mutta liian paljon ohjelmaa ei yhdelle päivälle kannata ottaa. Uudessa paikassa törmää usein johonkin mielenkiintoiseen, jota ei ole osannut suunnitella etukäteen.
NIzza olikin jo selvästi isompi kaupunki ja ehdottomasti ruuhkaisampi, joten autolla tänne ei ole niin mukava saapua. Kuten muissakin kaupungeissa tähän asti, parkkihallit ovat paras vaihtoehto löytää pysäköintipaikka, vaikka ne ovatkin usein melko ahtaita. Pysäköintihinnat eivät ole ihan halpoja, joskaan ei mitenkään kohtuuttomia.
Ensivaikutelma Nizzasta oli oikein hyvä. Aurinko paahtoi rantabulevardille, josta ajoimme ohi. Toisella puolella sitä siinsi Välimeri ja toista puolta hallitsivat vanhasta ajasta henkivät hotellirakennukset ja villat. Nizza on tunnettu aurinkoisuudestaan, ja alunperin se oli suosittu nimenomaan talvikohteena. Nizzan historia juurtaa kauas taakse, 330 eea, jolloin kreikkalaiset perustivat Nikaian siirtokunnan. Roomalaiset tulivat myöhemmin alueelle - Provence-nimi tuleekin provincia-sanasta, sillä alue oli aikanaan Rooman provinssi.
Lähdimme aluksi vanhaan kaupunkiin päin. Väkeä oli paljon liikenteessä, muttei tungokseksi asti, joten voin vain kuvitella millaista täällä on heinäkuussa tai elokuussa. Kaupunki teki kyllä vaikutuksen: Nizza on sykkivä suurkaupunki, jossa on kuitenkin vahvasti vanhan ajan glamouria. Vanhakaupunki oli juuri semmoinen ihastuttava paikka kapeine kujineen ja kauniine rakennuksineen, kun voi vaan kuvitella. Vilkasimme Cathédrale de Ste-Réparaten ja kävimme mitä ihastuttavimmassa keksikaupassa.
Paikalliseen puistoon oli laitettu pystyyn jalkapallon EM-kisojen fanialue ja valtavia screenejä. Kisathan pelataan täällä Ranskassa ja itse asiassa huomasimme, että muutama peli pelataan myös täällä Nizzassa. (Lippuja ei sentään enää ollut saatavilla.) Meidän talon läheltä on jopa ylhäältäpäin hyvä näkymä stadionille, mutta taitaa olla vähän liian kaukana tiiraillakseen sieltä peliä.
Fanialueen lisäksi puistossa oli useita suihkulähteitä, jotka tulivat maasta. Ei varmaan ole vaikea arvata, ryntäsivätkö lapset sinne innosta kiljuen ja tietysti kaikki vaatteet ja kengät päällä. Lopputuloksena kuumuudesta viilentyneet ja tyytyväiset mutta läpimärät lapset. Onneksi olin tälläkin kertaa pakannut molemmille varavaatteet mukaan.
Sää muuttui pilvikseksi ja taivaalta alkoi ripotella, joten päätimme käydä vielä Musée Massénassa, joka on Nizzan belle epoque -aikakautta esittelevä elegantti villa ihan rantakadun tuntumassa. Museo itsessään oli näkemisen arvoinen eikä liian valtava. Pääosin se esitteli hulppeita huonekaluja, mutta myös muuta ajan esineistöä. Valitettavasti lapset olivat jo päivästä poikki ja meininki todella levotonta. En yhtään ihmettele, että museon valvoja seurasi meitä läpi näyttelyn.
Nizzaan jäi vielä paljon nähtävää, joten tänne voisi suunnitella matkan toisenkin kerran.

The day we spent in Nice was very hot. Our intention was to stroll around the old town (Vieux Nice), the cours Saleya market place as well as the Promenade des Anglais. Possibly check out some museum, if there was time left. I have noticed that open plans like this work the best with children (and why not for adults as well). It’s important to have some kind of idea, what to see, and know in which direction to head, but you should not plan too much program for one day. In a new location you always find something interesting, which you could not have foreseen.
Nice is clearly a big city with lots of traffic, so arriving by car here was not so pleasant. As in the other cities the best option to find a parking lot for your car is going into a narrow parking garage. The parking prices are not the cheapest but neither unreasonable.
My first impression of Nice was good. The sunny promenade and blue Mediterranean welcomed us, as we drove by. The other side of the promenade was dominated by beautiful old hotel buildings and villas. Nice is known for its sunshine year round and it was actually at first a popular destination in the winter time. The history of Nice dates back to to the 4th century BC, when Nikaia was founded by Greeks as a trading post. Romans came later to the area - the name Provence comes from provincia, since the area was a Roman province.
We headed first to the old town. There were lots of people, but not too much, so I can only imagine how it looks like in July or August. The city made an impression: Nice is a vivid city but still with a feeling of old time glamour. The Vieux Nice with its narrow streets and beautiful buildings was just as lovely as you can imagine. We checked out the Cathédrale de Ste-Réparate and visited the most wonderful cookie shop.
A fan zone and huge screens for the UEFA Euro 2016 were built up in the local park. France hosts the tournament and we noticed, that actually a few games are played here in Nice. (Unfortunately no tickets were anymore available.) Near our house, there is a great view down to the stadium, but I guess it’s a bit too far to try to watch the game.
Besides the fan zone the local park had numerous fountains coming up from the ground. It’s not hard to guess, what the boys did in the heat - they jumped in the water screaming with joy and naturally with all their clothes and shoes on. The result: chilled and happy but soaked children. Luckily I had packed another set of clothes for both.
The weather changed into cloudy and some drops fell from the sky, so we decided to visit the Musée Masséna, which is an elegant villa representing the Nice belle époque history located near the promenade. The museum was worth a visit and not too huge. Mostly it displayed gorgeous furniture but also lots of other objects. Unfortunately the children were so worn out that the whole visit was really restless. Thus, I do not blame the museum supervisor for following us throughout the exhibition.
There remained lots to see in Nice, so this city is worth planning another trip in the future.
